The Medicare Program
The Medicare program is a federal health insurance program for people who are 65 years of age or older, certain younger adults with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Medicare provides health insurance coverage to about 47 million Americans. It was created in 1965 by the Social Security Administration to provide hospital and medical insurance benefits for all citizens over the age of 65.
Who qualifies for Medicare?
If you are aged 65 or older, and meet the Social Security’s requirements for citizenship or residency. If your spouse is also qualifying then he/she can receive a free Medicare card from his/her spouse’s earnings record by filling out an application called form SSA-2490 plus one additional piece of identification with their name in it. You may be eligible if you have been receiving disability benefits under title II (SSDI) of the Social Security Act for 24 months as determined by SSA before turning age 65.

How to enroll in Medicare?
To enroll in Medicare you have to apply for it and be qualified. You can do this by filling out an application with Social Security, which is called form SSA-2490 plus one additional piece of identification that has your name on it.

Does my doctor accept Medicare??
If you are already enrolled in Medicare Part A and B, or if you have a Medigap supplemental insurance plan that is accepted by the doctor(s) of your choice, then it’s just a matter of finding out which doctors accept your Medicare coverage. Doctors accepting new patients with valid forms need to be in network as well so please check their website for this information before scheduling an appointment.
